Gródek nad Dunajcem – February 27, 2024 – Slovak technology company GOSPACE LABS will be responsible for the digital infrastructure of the FLOPRES project, which focuses on flood prevention and early warning.
February was a truly exciting month for us at GOSPACE LABS, marked by the fantastic opportunity to connect with our international partners who are proud members of FLOPRES. We kicked off in Prešov before moving on to Gródek nad Dunajcem in Poland. The reason? To share the unique contributions each FLOPRES member brings to the table, fostering a collaborative environment where we all can thrive from our collective expertise.
Increased use of land and water, lack of adequate adaptation strategies, and climate change are leading to higher risks of water-related incidents. These include landslides and flash floods. Although the approach to water management has changed in the last decade and new technologies for flood risk prevention have been introduced, recurring floods point to shortcomings in predicting these risks and endangered areas.
This is why the FLOPRES project, funded by the European Union LIFE program, aims to develop and implement a comprehensive early warning system for flash floods. The digital infrastructure from GOSPACE LABS plays a key role in this project, enabling the collection and analysis of important data on the environmental status.
The infrastructure will consist of a unique network of sensors that are easy to install and maintain:
- Water Level Sensor (MERATCH): measures the water level and Clings onto existing structures like bridges to gauge water levels
- Sensor for Rainfall Measurement: measures the amount of precipitation and could be easily attached to a pole.
- Soil Moisture Sensor: measures soil moisture and is simply inserted into the ground.
And there’s more in the pipeline! In collaboration with our partners, we’re developing additional sensors to broaden the FLOPRES project’s horizons:
- FlowSense: Keeps tabs on surface runoff in small streams.
- HydroCam: An optical sensor that captures snapshots of the current environmental state.
- SNOW Sensor: Measures the height of snow cover.
Why are we excited about our digital infrastructure? It’s simple:
- Easy Installation: Our sensors are a breeze to attach to existing infrastructure.
- Low Maintenance: They require just occasional checks, saving time and hassle.
- Cost-Effective: Designed to be affordable for widespread adoption.
- Reliable Communication: Ensures high data availability and reliability.
International cooperation for better protection
The FLOPRES project represents a significant step forward in combating flood risks and building more resilient communities. It is the result of cooperation between the following partners:
- ESPRIT Ltd., project coordinator, Slovakia
- GOSPACE LABS s. r. o., digital infrastructure provider, Slovakia
- Prešovský samosprávny kraj, pilot region, Slovakia
- Meteo Spółka Z Ograniczoną Odpowiedzialnością, partner for meteorological data, Poland
- Małopolska Agencja Rozwoju Regionalnego S.A., partner for implementation in the Małopolska Voivodeship, Poland
February may be the shortest month, but it was packed with meaningful connections and progress for the FLOPRES project.
